Forget Me Not

Acrylic and oil stick on canvas, 2017
101.6 cm x 101.6 cm

Appreciating and inspired by the fascinating behaviours of these gentle giants in the wild, through her paint pours, wild brushstrokes and vivid colours, Yu portrays the innocence of elephants and their cheery lifestyles playing in water and walking tail to tail one after another. In the painting ‘They Say Freedom Is A State Of Mind’, Yu makes a rhetorical statement to draw connections to how ‘free’ animals are being perceived in our society. Yu believes that both human and wild life animals equally deserve to celebrate their freedom even if it is a state of mind. In the other painting where it shows the backside of an elephant - ‘Forget Me Not’ - Yu challenges the ironic idea of elephants walking away from their families to pass away quietly alone, yet never forgetting the lives they left behind.
